Several years have passed since the appearance of e-books (or electronic books in Spanish), and the devices prepared to read them, e-readers . In this article we will analyze the different characteristics of this type of reading, so that those of you who are undecided about whether to purchase one or not, can make your decision.
We’ll start with a couple of definitions, which are often confused.
An e-book is an electronic book that can be read by a large number of devices.
An e-reader is a specialized device for reading e-books that has numerous advantages over other general-purpose devices, such as tablets.
We can find different types of e-reader in the market, and they live in a wide range of prices. The most important feature they present is electronic ink , a method that will greatly facilitate our reading, since it will not tire our eyes (as it would for example read on a Tablet or a PC), it will save a tremendous amount of battery and will not need a back light.
If we increase the price range, we can find e-readers with more functionalities, such as WiFi, color screens or touch screen, for example. But in the end, the most important functionality that they will present to us is that of ink, the rest are added, but they are far from necessary.
ADVANTAGE
1. Electronic books do not take up space, and once we buy them they will always be available for download.
2. The price of buying an electronic book is much less than buying a paper book.
3. You can have a new work almost instantly, without waiting for it to reach a bookstore or your own home. Everything is within a click, go.
4. It facilitates access to reading for people with visual deficiencies. Some e-readers are specifically prepared for this audience, but all have at least the possibility of controlling the font size.
5. You can search for a quote or word in the text. This feature greatly facilitates the search for our favorite fragment or trying to remember a name that has come out previously.
6. E-books are more comfortable, both for reading and for transporting. We could carry 40 books in our pockets.
7. E-book readers consume battery only when switching pages, so it can last us up to a month.
DISADVANTAGES
1. Both a computer and an Internet connection are necessary to acquire the e-books and transfer them to our reading device.
2. Although the acquisition of books and their storage in our e-reader is not excessively complicated, for a new user or not very used to using computers, they will need help, at least the first few times.
3. It supposes a somewhat high initial cost, since we can be talking about prices that would be around € 100 for an e-reader. More, if we want more functionalities.
4. Not all books have been digitized (especially the oldest ones), therefore, they cannot be acquired yet.
5. Lose the intrinsic romanticism of a book. Feel the texture of the leaves when turning the page, the smell of a new book and being able to look with pride at your bookstore.
6. Readers, like all electronic devices, can break down.
CONCLUSION
First of all, an e-book will be profitable for you if you read at least four or five books a year, for its large initial investment. Or if you have trouble reading, as its functions can help you read more comfortably without tiring your eyes. After all, each person must make their decision based on their priorities, so it is better to think about it before launching into this type of purchase.
