This is only rarely the case, but this Magic Quadrant differs significantly from that of last year. The former stars of the “Leaders” section, namely SAS and TIBCO Software, are now very much in competition with former challengers and visionaries.

In fact, the 2020 “Leaders” section has become widely populated. Alongside SAS and TIBCO, Gartner has classified Dataiku, Alteryx, MathWorks and Databricks as “Leaders” . A great consecration for these publishers formerly considered as second knives or young shoots in the making. In 2019, Alteryx and Dataiku were classified as “Challengers” while MathWorks and Databricks battled with big names in the cloud in the “Visionaries” square.

As a result, your eyes are playing no nasty tricks on you, major players like IBM, Microsoft or Google who are constantly pushing their very cloud vision of data analysis with great marketing support and who have considerably enriched their solutions. Machine Learning in 2019, still does not appear in the square of “Leaders”  ! IBM must be content with the square “Challengers” which it occupies besides in solitary, and Google and Microsoft always stagnate in the square of consolation of “Visionaries”.
Gartner criticizes IBM for still lagging behind in Machine Learning despite the user-friendliness of its Watson Studio, for Microsoft its approach that is far too “Cloud First” and not multicloud enough, for Google having only beta and ” a lack of consistency and accessibility to Citizens Data Scientists.

By the way, it should be noted that this 2020 edition is also bad news for RapidMiner and KNIME, former “Leaders” 2019, downgraded this year from the “Visionaries”.

For Gartner, Alteryx is no longer perceived as a simple seller of data preparation solutions and has clearly positioned itself as a complete platform served by a popular “no-code” approach.

Gartner also salutes the execution capacities of Databricks’ vision which has established itself as a key player in the world of Apache Spark. Its customers appreciate the proposed roadmap and Databricks shows good growth in Europe and Asia with strong customer satisfaction.

Gartner appreciates MathWorks’ very focused production environment, its preconceived solutions and the consistency of the platform.

For the French of Dataiku, this presence in the “Leaders” section is a real consecration. The good news comes one after the other as the company has just signed a contract with NATO around the use of its platform for the development and deployment of artificial intelligence projects. Gartner also praises the company’s ability to strengthen its platform in terms of elasticity, enhanced machine learning and data governance. Customers appreciate its collaboration mechanisms between the different roles and professions of Data Science and the ease of use of the platform. Gartner judges the latter ”  mature and capable of handling a wide variety of use cases  “.
